Can you really be Self-Employed

A few months ago we said we would find out the situation with regard Self-employed Door Supervisors.  We can now report that things are as clear as they can be.

At the recent Door Supervisors Network Meeting, we were told by a jolly nice man from Deloitte, that you could indeed be Self-employed.  However, you have to be working for more than one Company/Client, and you have to have all the necessary insurances, etc, in order for this to be legitimate.

This means that if you work for a company they must deduct your Tax and NI at source.  They must also provide you with a payslip which states who you are, your address, tax code, earnings to date, tax to date, earning and tax for the period just worked (Week or Month).  If you are not recieving a payslip and are only being given an envelope of cash you need to be extremely careful.  If the company folds, and sadly too many do at the present time, you could be liable for tax on those earnings, should HMRC seek to recover that money.

The simple and safe way to ensure you don't get caught out if your employed, is to ensure you work for a reputable company.  A company that pays on time, without fail, who are easy to get hold of, and give you a proper payslip.
