This year offers forward thinkers opportunities to set them up for this year and the next!

2012 can be the year to make the most of your talents.

As 2012 unravels; everyone working in the Events, Hospitality, & Leisure Industry (EHLI) can have an extremely rewarding year.  However such an optimistic view must be tempered by a realistic approach to your own particular situation. As an employee, whilst you may be struggling for work now - come Easter things will alter radically.  Many companies are seeing Easter as the time they will begin their Olympic preparations in earnest. Therefore now is the best time to look at what you want from the EHLI over the next year.

Firstly, you have to ask yourself if you really want to work in the EHLI. By now you will know working in this environment requires a special kind of person, with a very special kind of mentality. Therefore if your heart is elsewhere and you feel you’re unable to give your best then do yourself, your employer, and most importantly the customer a favour – and leave.

The fact is the EHLI needs people who know instinctively how to lift peoples spirits.  So if you’re capable of remaining calm, maintaining a friendly smile, as well as being supportive of colleagues and customers alike, when you’re dog-tired, then you are indeed a special person.  Consequently you are worth your weight in gold to a good employer and you are well placed to make the most of your talents.

Secondly,  have a look at who you’re working for and ask yourself if they are a good employer?  Do they look after you properly?  Do they pay your tax, NI, and give you proper holiday pay?  Do they make sure you work in a safe environment?  Do they provide any necessary safety equipment?  Do they give you training which helps you do your job more effectively.  Do you feel part of the team where you work?  If the answer to any of these questions is no – then this may be the time to leave.

The truth is there some fantastic venues and venue operators out there!  As times get harder these will be the ones which survive and thrive.  These operators understand the importance of having well trained employees dedicated to the success of their business.  Already some of the more forward thinking operators in the EHLI are taking steps to regain full control of their customer offer – indeed some are even bringing security back in-house.  These operators understand that if they create a safe and welcoming environment for their customers, they are more likely to succeed.

The number 1 tip for 2012 according to most experts is; If you want to succeed as an individual or business, then the cheapest, most effective, way of maximising your opportunities, is by making sure your customer service is always first class, whatever the situation.

A very special and successful New Year to you all!
