Severe weather over weekend

There is now an AMBER alert for snow for London over this weekend - summary of forecast and likely impacts for London and surrounding areas as follows:

Friday night - cold overnight, with snow showers possibly affecting central and eastern parts of Kent (1-2cm in places)

Saturday night - a band of snow will be moving east across London and surrounding areas from approx 19:00 Saturday evening giving 5-10cm of snow in places.  Areas to the west of London may only have 2-5cm.  This may turn to sleet/rain in the early hours of Sunday morning and should clear by dawn on Sunday morning.  The combination of cold temperatures and snow/rain is likely to lead to widespread ice across areas on Sunday morning.

Sunday - Temperatures are likely to stay below 2ºC throughout Sunday, so snow that falls Saturday night is likely to stay.

Sunday night/Monday morning - possibility of a weak front overnight bringing sleet/rain but main concern is icy roads into Monday morning.

Readiness of organisations

Transport, local authorities and other agencies have been preparing for severe weather for some time and are ready to stand up arrangements as required over the weekend.

Considerations for businesses

The snow and ice over Saturday night into Sunday may cause travel disruption - Snow is likely to worst affect eastern areas, including Kent, Essex, East Anglia and Greater London.  Icy conditions are likely to continue into Monday morning which could affect the morning rush hour.
