Stabbings
This type of incident is sadly more common and you need to ensure that you are continually conducting your Dynamic Risk Assessments. Being aware of your surroundings, the atmosphere, and the general mood of the crowd is your best form of protection.
An implement, with a blade over 3" long, is classed as an offensive weapon. However do not be fooled by a smaller blade or seemingly normal products, nail file, metal comb, filed down hairbrush handle, etc. These items, used effectively, can cause some significant injury or even be fatal. Always be cautious if people are reluctant to be searched, whilst it could be any number of things, DO NOT discount the possibility thay may be carrying weapon. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a Long overcoat, slash-proof gloves and stab-vests. Never your take PPE for granted, make sure it is properly maintained.
Who carries knives?
Using a knife is up-close and personal. It is easy to obtain, carry, and conceal. It doesn't attract the same level of punishment as that given out for a gun crime. Therefore for gangs and individuals the knife is the more intelligent choice of weapon. For gang members it is a question of status and a method of enforcing respect. For the individual it is often used as a form of protection. These people see a knife, or more accurately, the threat of using a knife as a "leveller" in what would be an otherwise unequal confrontation. The problem individuals have is - once the blade is drawn - they have to be willing to use it! If they are not willing - a bad situation is probably going to get worse.
